Free Workshops for Schools
Pantomime is back at the Barbican this Christmas. Throughout 2017, producers will be investing thousands in an education and outreach programme that is completely free for primary and secondary schools to access.
Pantomime is a uniquely British theatrical genre with a long history, and draws influences from Ancient Greece and Italian Commedia dell'arte, to Victorian Music Hall and the celebrity culture of today. Our workshops will give an exciting and unique insight into our country's most popular art form - panto!
July 2017 Panto in a Day (at York Barbican)
Just before the end of the summer term, the Barbican will be throwing open its doors to four schools, offering a full day of creative learning. The panto's cast and creative team will work with a group of students for a full day on site at the Barbican, taking them on stage and behind the scenes. Participants will learn about the history and traditions of panto, performance elements such as stock characters, dance and music, and take a look at the technical side of a production.
October 2017 Panto Workshop (onsite at your school)
During the Autumn term, a team from the Barbican's panto will visit ten schools around the city, taking a fun packed practical panto workshop to primary and secondary students. The session will include an introduction to the history of pantomime, and a chance to have a go at playing the characters and telling the jokes!
